Connected.
The Landscape Architecture for Te Katonga Nui has been created by Brad Dobson of blac projects, in consultation with Ngā Mahanga hapū.
The concept acknowledges the importance of the awa and connected ecology. The project enables restoration/partial daylighting of Te Mangaone Stream behind the development. In addition to the weir and constructed wetland, we are incorporating a pathway, seating and what will become a much loved tuna sculpture nestled into the weir rocks.
We have also enabled pedestrian connections into Te Katonga Nui from the Ōkato Skatepark and playground.
Restored Heritage.
We have worked closely with Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga (HNZPT) throughout the project’s planning and will continue to do so through to completion.
In agreement with HNZPT, the larger open-air classroom and school hall will be demolished to make way for the development, but the smaller classroom will be refurbished and kept onsite for reuse as a cost-effective, community-led Hapū Hub: a safe, dry, multifunctional space for hui, wānanga, rangatahi activities and other community needs. Space,
to thrive.
All homes are fully fenced, and landscaped. The 16 standalone whanau homes all have an internal access single garage. The proposed kaumātua units have adjacent carparks, including an accessible park. Each section at Te Katonga Nui has a landscape design complete with patios, planting, generous backyards and even the garden shed.
